Residencies

LAC-USC
Ok I’ll admit it I am biased, but USC is the best EM residency out there. You see a ton of patients with different diseases. There are hundreds of patients coming through the ED daily with 5-10 residents and 2-3 faculty member on duty at any given time. There are non-stop learning opportunities with multifaceted discussions as the norm. You learn how to skin every cat 10 different ways, with lively debates about why one faculty may choose one method while another chooses a different method. In my experience there was always a tremendous amount of professional respect between faculty members, even if treatment approaches were significantly different.

Did I mention traumarama! In other residencies seniors residents may have inserted 1 or 2 chest tubes throughout an entire residency. At USC 2nd and 3rd year students have often had their fill, and by their 4th year are typically walking 2nd and 3rd year residents through them. Most have done at least one thoracotomy before graduation, many in my class had performed 4 or more.
Also look at the faculty…. Stuart Swadron, the walking brain. He was created to teach (and somehow manages to not make you feel like a mental midget, even though he obviously knows more than God!). Billy Mallon who has a flare for teaching that makes information stick to your brain as though his voice is coated with super glue. Did I mention he is the current cal/acep president. Edward Newton and Sean Henderson are two of the biggest names in Emergency medicine, and make tremendous contributions to the field, while remaining accessible to residents as they run the department. The list goes on and on. I haven’t even mentioned Mel Herbert of EM RAP, Kim Newton, Maureen McCollough, Deidre Anglin, Susan Stone, Marc Eckstein, Alessandra Conforto, Ashok Jain, and the dozens of other faculty members and graduates who made such tremendous and selfless contributions to my education and the education of dozens of other emergency practitioners.

The teaching conferences are also phenomenal, I still go when I’m in town.
